How We Go To War With Iran Today

By David Stockman  |  July 9, 2019

So, we’re at the stage of the game where Iran is publicly announcing, in real time, the steps it’s taking in its accelerated plan to produce uranium. And why not?

This is yet another classic case of damned by Imperial Washington if they do, damned by Imperial Washington if they don’t.

It’s the Donald feeling his full powers.

It’s the kind of stuff that makes for headlines like “Liberal boogeyman George Soros and right-wing billionaire Charles Koch have teamed up to stop ‘endless war.’”

The Iran Deal

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreed in July 2015 established limits on Iran’s production of uranium. In short, the “Iran deal” was designed to prevent the Islamic Republic from producing a quantity of uranium enriched to a purity high enough to support a nuclear weapon. And, in short, it was working.

That agreement was made among the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States – plus Germany; the European Union; and Iran. Of course, the Donald withdrew the U.S. from the deal in May 2018.

Whether due to his own infinitely stable genius or through the efforts of the neocon warmonger John Bolton, it was an exercise in mindless escalation.

And, of course, there’s a lot more where that came from…

A Threat On Global Stability

Bolton and his fellow traveler Mike Pompeo understand how to pull and pluck the Donald’s strings.

They know as well as anyone that Iran is zero threat to the American homeland and has never engaged in any hostile action on U.S soil or even threatened the same.

Imperial Washington’s military and naval assets in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf comprise the occupational force of a naked aggressor. The U.S. has created more mayhem throughout the broader region over the past three decades than any native antagonist.

The high-minded hold onto the will-o’-wisp of “oil security,” while the neocons still simply demonize and isolate the Iranian regime, so they can change it; sheer brilliance.

And then when they announce new sanctions they’ll get responses like this:

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called the new sanctions “outrageous and stupid.” Mr. Khamenei, while the political leader of Iran, also is one of the world’s leading authorities for Shia Muslims.

“Would any administration with a bit of wisdom [sanction] the highest authority of a country? And not only a political authority, a religious, social, spiritual one, and not the leader of Iran only, the leader of the Islamic revolution all over the world?” Mr. Rouhani said in a speech broadcast on state television.

He said it was “obvious” that the U.S. was lying about wanting to negotiate with Iran: “You want us to negotiate with you again?” Mr. Rouhani said, “and at the same time you seek to sanction the foreign minister too?”…

Iran also said these sanctions closed the door on diplomacy and threatened global stability, as American officials renewed efforts to build a global alliance against Tehran

Viewed in the proper context, this response by Iranian officials intensified efforts to destroy their economy is more than warranted.

Cue the Tweeter-in-Chief, which was the point of the entire exercise:

….Iran’s very ignorant and insulting statement, put out today, only shows that they do not understand reality. Any attack by Iran on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force. In some areas, overwhelming will mean obliteration. No more John Kerry & Obama!

Those are reckless words. And for what?

The Fear Model

The best cure for high oil prices is the global market, not the Fifth Fleet. And the demonization of the Iranian regime is based on lies and propaganda ginned up by the Bibi Netanyahu branch of the War Party. It’s a fear-based model that works in Israel. So, they’ve made Iran an “existential” threat everywhere.

Another way to say it is we have no dog in this hunt anymore.

This is all about a global military-industrial-surveillance complex exploiting relationships made on Cold War “logic” for 21st century purposes. America would certainly be no worse for the wear if Imperial Washington were to dispense with its idiotic economic warfare against Iran.

At the end of the day, the Donald is carrying water for Bolton and the neocons, Bibi and the Saudis, without knowing it at all.

It is, perhaps, the ultimate irony of his retro “America First” campaign.

An utterly unnecessary conflagration in the Persian Gulf will extend Forever War. And it will upend the global economy.

But it absolutely won’t MAGA.

Straight Dope

Desperate times call for… “common sense” measures.

And these are desperate times… Markets are corrupted by monetary central planning. They’re confused. And the road back is going to be treacherous.

We’re looking at a major re-pricing for all financial assets. And thousand-point intraday or day-to-day swings are part of that equation. Those can be frightening… for “buy and hold” investors.

I have a different approach, one that combines strategy and tactics into a plan flexible enough for you to survive and thrive amid the coming chaos. It’s called “The Stockman Model.”

All we’re after is a little stability, perhaps a chance to pocket a windfall when opportunity presents…
